  • John Stark

    Job Role: Director, Geo Investigation and Consulting

    John has been with Quantum for over 30 years, including its origins as Thyssen’s Geotechnical Department. In this time he has developed a wealth of experience in all aspects of ground engineering. As leader of the Geotechnical Ground Investigation and Consultancy Team, John is involved in every aspect of Quantum’s geotechnical investigation and consultancy capability, as well as providing expert technical input on geo-contracting projects. He also leads the company on all aspects of Quality, maintaining the Business Management System and ISO accreditations.

    John’s vast experience reflects the exceptional range of work undertaken by Quantum; this varies from risk assessments for mining or geo-environmental issues, through to full investigation of sites by whatever technique is appropriate, applying a value engineered approach to ensure the maximum data is obtained for optimum costs to the client’s benefit; to full interpretation of data and development of bespoke design solutions to fit client needs.

  • Jim Goodfellow

    Job Role: Director, Geo Contracting

    Jim has worked for Quantum, and previously Thyssen, for over 30 years. He has extensive experience of the construction industry, mainly in the civil engineering and geotechnical contracting sectors, both in the UK and overseas.

    Jim oversees the Geo Contracting division of Quantum Geotechnical and is involved from pre-tender through to final account on the larger schemes. He is responsible for identifying innovative ways to provide cost effective solutions for clients, and is responsible for the procurement, undertaking and safe completion to the highest standards of all Geotechnical Contracting operations.

    Jim is also the Director responsible for all Health and Safety matters within Quantum Geotechnical, and in his time managing our H&S systems has overseen great improvements in our performance.

  • Ross McDermott

    Job Role: Director

    Ross initially joined Thyssen Geotechnical in 2003, later to become Quantum Geotechnical, and became immediately involved in all aspects of ground investigation contracting, and geotechnical and geo-environmental consultancy. Throughout this period Ross became responsible for the development and management of Quantum’s Ground Investigation section across the UK with considerable experience in interpretative report writing, including infrastructure, foundation solutions, slope stability, ground characterisation, earthworks/groundworks recommendations, geo-environmental assessments and remediation strategies for contaminated land.

    Having worked with Quantum since its inception, and contributed to the company’s evolution and growth, now as Company Director, Ross is responsible for all operational, financial, commercial and SHEQ matters within the company, with an emphasis on quality and efficiency.

  • Steff Probert

    Job Role: Operations Manager Geo Contracting

    Steff manages and oversees all the projects within the geo-contracting section of Quantum. Having worked in ground investigation and ground engineering for over 20 years, Steff has developed an extensive knowledge of drilling and ground engineering techniques covering slope stabilisation, mine treatment, underpinning, ground anchorages and retaining structures. Steff has successfully executed these contracts on sensitive historical sites, contaminated sites, over water, in confined spaces and on highways and railways.

    Steff also takes a lead role in ensuring our fleet of drilling rigs, masts and ancillary equipment function at optimum outputs and that they conform with all current health and safety requirements.

  • Gareth Morris

    Job Role: Laboratory Manager

    Gareth oversees the Laboratory and In-Situ testing for all Quantum’s work in the UK, responsible for the day-to-day management of the company’s testing capability. His leadership is a key factor in the continued success and continued growth of Quantum’s testing facility, with a firm belief in fostering a strong relationship with client organisations.

    Gareth is the Quality Manager for Quantum’s UKAS Accredited Laboratory and leads on maintaining our quality standards and accreditations, as well as developing the schedule of accredited tests. Gareth manages the team of Laboratory Technicians in the development and management of site-specific resource and controls, and demands delivery of project requirements to a consistently high standard along with the need to address the financial and risk management aspects of schemes.

  • Pete Willis

    Job Role: Commercial Manager

    Pete has worked at Quantum for over 17 years, and previously worked as an Engineer on numerous geotechnical and ground investigation contracts, both in the UK and abroad. Pete’s experience provides expertise in dealing with client enquiries and offering practical advice on the correct route and method for successful delivery of projects, whether in ground investigation, testing or geo-contracting.

    Pete heads up all commercial aspects of Quantum’s business, including tendering and financial accounting and mentoring project engineers on the commercial elements of their work. He manages a huge portfolio of potential work, controlling and planning the tendering process to ensure that all aspects of each tender are addressed satisfactorily and translated into the planning and execution of projects.

  • Jim Dennis

    Job Role: Regional Manager - South West

    Jim is a UK Registered Ground Engineering Professional with over 16 years of professional experience in ground investigation and geotechnical engineering. He is responsible for the management and technical output of the ground investigation and geo-contracting capability within Quantum’s South West operations. His leadership is a key factor in the continued success and growth of Quantum Geotechnical, thanks to his firm belief in fostering a strong relationship with client organisations and designers.

    Jim leads on the development and management of site specific resource and controls, establishes and implements a partnering philosophy and demands delivery of project requirements to a consistently high standard, along with the need to address the financial and risk management aspects of schemes.

  • Ben Tucker

    Job Role: Senior Engineering Geologist - South West

    Ben has over 10 years’ experience in the design, supervision and management of geotechnical and geo-environmental site investigations. Projects range from desk studies through to high profile and sensitive investigations for various construction, infrastructure and contaminated land remediation schemes, both on land and over water.

    Ben is responsible for procurement, design and delivery of factual and interpretative geotechnical and geo-environmental ground investigation and design reports, providing recommendations for a wide variety of aspects including pavement design, sustainable drainage systems, building foundations and bearing capacities, earthworks, land gas assessments, cliff and slope stabilisation, and contaminated land remediation. Ben also assists with the operational and commercial management of the South West regional office.

  • Phil Darby

    Job Role: Senior Chartered Engineering Geologist – South Wales

    Phil is responsible for the South Wales based Geotechnical and Ground Investigation team. Phil administers and co-ordinates all ground investigation and consultancy contracts. Having been with Quantum for over 5 years and in the industry as a whole for over 10 years, as one of Quantum’s Senior Chartered Engineering Geologists, Phil leads a team of Engineering Geologists and Senior Technicians based at Quantum’s Head Office in South Wales, driving the Geotechnical and Ground Investigation sections forward and working closely with Quantum’s regional offices to ensure that Clients are offered a bespoke, personable and quality service.

    Phil’s strengths lie in in his technical knowledge and vast experience across the ground investigation industry, with a natural ability to provide graduates and new team members with the support, encouragement and knowledge required to ensure that they have every opportunity to develop into their roles and continue to build upon their chosen careers.
