The overall scheme involved the construction of a new road approximately 1000m in length, together with the construction of two roundabouts, one of which ties into the A4046 at the southernmost point of the existing steelworks site in Ebbw Vale.
The creation of new infrastructure links called for the permanent stabilisation of a former tip associated with the former steelworks. Our excavator mounted TEI Hem550 drill masts along with Comacchio MC600 drill rigs fitted with Eurodrill HD4008 drifter drills were selected for the task. These drill rigs delivered unrivalled flexibility and the power needed to overcome the dense boulder riddled ground encountered.
Our solution involved:
- Soil Nailing: Installation of 700 Dywidag R38 self drilling soil nails to an average depth of 17.5m with 90mm sacrificial drill bits.
- Meshing: Placing and fixing over 3500 sq. metres of Maccaferri rockfall netting with associated perimeter cables and edge detailing.
